Abstract A statistical overview is given of the first 50 volumes of the journal Scientometrics.Authorship and co-authorship characteristics, as well as citation and reference patterns of the journal are analysed. Geographic and thematic maps of its papers are presented. A brief outlook to the future prospects and challenges is attempted
