Abstract:
Summary The major decisions regarding the investment in a flow line are made during the design phase. The allocation of buffers between the work stations can have a great impact on production rates, inventory levels, and the net present value of the investment over the lifetime of the flow line. The paper defines the buffer allocation as an investment problem related to observable cash flows and describes analytical techniques that help to determine close-to-optimal buffer allocations quickly. Numerical examples show the relevance of the problem and the structure of optimized buffer allocations.
