Abstract: Summary Cooperations, especially strategic alliances and joint ventures, are popular modes of entry into a foreign market. This paper deals with the several types of international cooperations and their management. It records and reports the results of a field study of 24 multinational companies, of which 19 are members of the Arbeitskreis “Organisation und Führung international tätiger Unternehmen” der Schmalenbach-Gesellschaft für Betriebswirtschaft e. V. The study shows that the selection of the right partner who shares the firm’s vision for the purpose of the alliance and is unlikely to opportunistically exploit the alliance for its own ends is one of the keys to making a cooperation successful.
