Abstract:
Summary This study in the history of economic and business science asks, if economics and German business economics (Betriebswirtschaftslehre) are built on a common foundation. Part I criticizes Buchanan’s statement that economic theory was born with the discovery of spontaneous coordination. Part II discusses the origin of professorships in business economics (cameral science) and economics. Part III verifies that solutions for business problems on investment and finance, uncertainty, pricing, and costs are mainly not developed by mainstream economics, but have their origin in empirical findings and mathematical thinking. Part IV discusses methodological prerequisites to find a common foundation for the two disciplines.
