Abstract: Summary The importance of corporate networks has constantly increased during the past years. In this regard there is a number of different reasons to justify the increased usage of this institutional arrangement to coordinate economic activities between different corporations. The following article presents an economic approach to explain the emergence of corporate networks in industries, in which indirect network externalities can be found. A game theoretic model is used to show that these corporate networks allow the adoption of standards and that the establishment of networks may still make sense from the economic perspective, even though internal network coordination costs exist.
