Abstract: Summary Under changing circumstances strategies often loose their ability to generate a successful outcome. Therefore planning processes that are suitable for generating successful strategies are gaining importance under the condition of a highly dynamic environment. This paper offers a framework of basic dimensions of planning processes which are seen in the itensity, the rationality and the openness of the planning process. To test the impact on success for all three dimensions empirically, data were collected in 220 german manufacturing firms and analyzed using moderated regression analysis. A high rationality was found to be generally superior. The impact of the intensity and the openness of the planning process on the success depends however on the dynamism of the environment. Under dynamic conditions a high intensity of planning and an open planning process are promising.
