Abstract:
Summary Compatibility standards have the power to change industry structure and help to establish new markets. Yet this high strategic relevance is not very well reflected in business literature. Therefore this paper deals with standardization strategies which are competitive strategies specifically designed for markets with network effects. Both, market or de-facto-standards and committee standards will be looked at. In order to analyse for which markets standardization strategies are useful, the concept of network effects, which has its origins in economics, will be developed further.
