Abstract:
Abstract Imprinting describes the process where entrepreneurs influence the organizational character in the firm’s early development phases. Hitherto, research has focused only on imprinting events at the foundation stage. We elucidate with our case study mechanisms that stabilize the organizational character, but which also dynamically adapt the firm’s frame of reference to novel situations. During the early development stages, entrepreneurs create knowledge and social structures, which enable them to exert influence also in later development stages both for achieving stability and facilitating change. Their gatekeeper role allows them to influence the field of tension between stability — depending on effective imprinting at the foundation stage — and change in terms of dynamic advancement.
