Abstract:
Abstract Nurse managers play an important role in hospitals. One of their essential roles is to supervise and, according to the research, they lack the basic skills required for effective clinical supervision. The aim of this study was to promote coronary care unit head nurses’ supervision performance. The participatory action research based on Kemmis model was used, and it consists of five phases. The study was carried out with 25 participants from 2018 to 2019 in coronary care units. Moreover, various methods, including semi-structured interviews, focus groups and observations in the field were applied to data collection. The data were analyzed through the continuous comparison method. Head nurse supervision issues were approved during the one cycle and four action plans. The action plans consist of standardizing care using the guidelines, implementing primary nursing for coronary care unit participatory management, recording according to the problem-based nursing report, designing the supervision checklist with the engaged group and the necessary changes were evaluated. Feedback and reflection were done throughout the phases. The results show that the use of nursing guidelines has improved the performance of staff nurses in caring patient. The activities were organized using the problem-based nursing report. Head nurses assessed the performance of nurses and the ward using supervisory checklist. In this study, the head nurses’ supervision performance has been promoted using the participatory action research and through the participatory management of head nurse and primary nurse, organizing the nurses’ activities with problem-based nursing report record, and providing the supervisory checklists.
