Maximizing user satisfaction in wireless networks with integrated aerial base stations

Abstract: Abstract Aerial base stations (ABSs) offer a practical means of expanding cellular network coverage. By incorporating ABSs, user equipment (UEs) can receive service when unable to connect to ground base stations (GBSs). Nevertheless, ensuring Quality-of-Service (QoS) satisfaction for all UEs, regardless of their serving base stations, is crucial. In this study, we address this challenge by formulating an optimization problem aimed at maximizing UE satisfaction within ABS integrated cellular networks. The defined problem is a mixed combinatorial and non-convex optimization problem and it is difficult to solve optimally in such a complex network environment. To tackle this, we propose a suboptimal heuristic dynamic scheduling algorithm that considers coordination between ABS and GBS. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of our dynamic solution in terms of UE satisfaction compared to a baseline static algorithm, where QoS coefficients are initially set and remain unchanged throughout scheduling.
