Abstract: Abstract The present study considers the behavior of a complex water-mudstone volume of a mudflow in a configuration with an arcuate lateral curvature. The system of 3D Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations was closed-loop in combination with the k-eps turbulent model. The volume of fluid (VOF) method was used to perform numerical simulations. For the correct description of the water flow and sedimentary flow, a modification of the mathematical model was carried out. Thus, the Newtonian model was used to describe the water flow, while the non-Newtonian model was used to describe the sedimentary layer. The modified model was validated using a test problem that had experimental and numerical data. The obtained results showed that the use of a multi-level protective column had a positive effect. So it can be seen that the movement of water at the initial moment occurs in a more accelerated form, while after a certain time the velocity value drops noticeably, which leads to the braking of the mixture downstream, which in the future can give an advantage for emergency evacuation of people. So, by the end of the channel, the difference reaches up to 2.5 s compared to without a number of protective cylindrical columns.
