Abstract:
Abstract This study presents additional evidence of the role of FDI flows in upgrading the quality of exports. Using industry-level data on Brazilian FDI inflows, we show that FDI inflows promote export upgrading. Moreover, where you export matters. Exports to emerging economies benefited from quality upgrading due to FDI inflows, especially of medium-high-tech products. Our findings show that both intermediate and final goods contribute to the quality upgrading identified in our analysis, particularly when sold to emerging economies.
