Abstract: The implementation of the Bologna process and the accompanying structural reforms have created systematic problems for university teaching and research. Under these new conditions, quite irrespective of individuals involved, the quality of university performance is dissatisfying and inefficient. The new pay conditions, evaluation processes and reductions in core funding for research are identified as being particularly debilitating. The intimately connected problems relating to the development of academic disciplines are added to this. To demonstrate these points, institutional economics, personnel economics and psychological arguments are drawn on to suggest complementary conclusions. Suggestions for the direction of necessary reforms and conceivable paths to get there are outlined. Copyright ZBW and Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014
