OPINION OF SERBIAN STUDENTS REGARDING KNOWLEDGE ECONOMY

Abstract: Global economic crisis has shown that only countries with high rate of innovation can preserve high levels of economic growth in an unsta- ble environment. Furthermore, it has been proven that nation's and the world's future economic growth will stem from industries that rely on knowledge, new ideas and innovation. Therefore, creation of a knowled- ge economy became a global challenge and a primary goal of countri- es around the world. The authors have conducted a survey of 324 un- dergraduate and postgraduate students in Serbia in order to grasp the- ir opinion regarding knowledge economy. The results have shown that concept of a knowledge economy is not well established and understo- od in Serbia and that students consider the knowledge as important fe- ature but not valued enough. These findings present a big policy chall- enge since the future of a country strongly depends on the knowledge of generations to come. The paper will provide a set of recommendati- ons on how Serbia could bridge this gap between global challenges and its young generations. Experiences and the recommendations from this case study might be of use for other countries in transition.
