Abstract: Digital transformation is increasingly recognised as a critical driver for competitiveness and sustainability in today's digital economy. However, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) often face significant resource constraints when implementing effective change. This paper undertakes a systematic review and comparative analysis of five prominent digital transformation maturity models. These models were selected for review based on their scholarly relevance, as determined through systematic filtering of relevance criteria within peer-reviewed academic sources. The study investigates the transformation process by examining models, thereby identifying common dimensions, varying maturity level structures, and implementation approaches that influence the process. A six-step framework was created to guide SMEs in selecting and tailoring a digital maturity model that aligns with their strategic objectives and operational realities. Following a thorough review and comparison of a range of models, a six-step framework was developed to assist SMEs in selecting and customising a digital maturity model aligned with their strategic objectives and operational realities. The framework under discussion places particular emphasis on three key aspects. Firstly, it is essential to undertake a thorough contextual analysis. Secondly, it is crucial to evaluate the available resources. Finally, the framework advocates a phased implementation strategy to ensure a sustainable digital transformation journey. The findings have implications for both academic discourse and practical application. They furnish SMEs with actionable insights that facilitate navigation of the challenges of digital innovation and enhancement of overall business performance.
