Abstract: This article aims to assess sustainability awareness among the Japanese and the commitment of governments and civil society. The study delves into Japan’s historical and cultural background, exploring the interplay between these factors and the natural environment. Original research was conducted through a survey questionnaire administered to native Japanese people and residents of Japan. The key findings indicate a correlation between the historical and cultural origins of the Japanese and their relationship with nature, which influences the current specificity of environmental policies in Japan. An assessment of the implemented actions confirms these initiatives encompass all pillars of sustainability: environment, society, and economy. However, Japanese society’s sustainability awareness and knowledge level fall below the global average. The data also reveal a gradual improvement over the years. The study concludes that Japan faces significant challenges and risks to sustainable development, particularly those arising from climate change, which are anticipated to become increasingly severe.
