Assessing health care infrastructure at the regional level: a statistical approach

Abstract: In this paper we construct a set of infrastructure and health-need synthetic indices for the Spanish Autonomous Communities out of a wide range of representative variables by means of the statistical technique of principal components. The combination of both infrastructure and need indices yields a final index of relative coverage which proxies the access to publicly insured health care conditions of Spanish citizens in different regions.
