Abstract:
This paper investigates the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic as a major public health emergency on the audit quality of China’s capital markets (measured by audit opinion and financial restatement). The pandemic significantly enhanced the auditors’ risk awareness and their prudence in audit reports, as evinced in the increased probability of modified audit opinions. Meanwhile, the probability of correcting major accounting errors in the companies’ annual reports published during the two years of the pandemic observably increased, and the implementation of remote audit procedures significantly increased this probability.
