Abstract:
This note re-examines the stochastic properties of divorce rates for 26 countries (23 OECD and 3 non-OECD EU member countries) over the 1960–2020 period. We utilize a novel panel unit-root test that jointly controls for cross-correlations and multiple gradual structural breaks and other nonlinearities present in the data. Our results provide robust empirical evidence supporting persistence or nonstationarity in divorce rates. Therefore, shocks or changes in divorce and family laws tend to have a permanent effect.
