Abstract:
This study examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on household savings in China by merging city-level COVID-19 data with household survey data. Our empirical analysis indicates that households experiencing greater severity of the pandemic demonstrate a significant shift towards increased long-term savings plan, more so than towards short-term savings plan or actualized savings. Restrictive policies are identified as the primary driving force, followed by changes in income expectations and macroeconomic perceptions. In contrast to developed countries, government transfers in China have a minor influence on savings plan. The study also reveals varied responses to the pandemic across different types of households.
