Abstract:
Approximately 15 per cent of the global population has disabilities, including 26 million people in India and 367,000 in Jammu and Kashmir. Persons with disabilities (PWD) face stigma worldwide, and derogatory labels in the Kashmiri language compound this problem. We applied stigma and labelling theories to analyse the effects of societal labels on PWD in Kashmir. Focusing on women participants, we explored the unique, gender-specific experiences of stigma they faced. We uncovered PWD’s experiences in the region through qualitative research and narrative analysis. We highlighted culturally specific labels deeply embedded in Kashmiri society, illustrating how these labels contribute to marginalisation. This approach offers a nuanced understanding of the social and emotional impacts of labelling on both men and women.
