Building a culture of tolerance: field reflections from the Peace Village of Nglinggi, Indonesia

Development in Practice, 2025, vol. 35, issue 5, 871-876

Abstract: This practice note explores the experience of Nglinggi Village, Indonesia, as a model of grassroots peacebuilding in a multicultural society. Through inclusive communication, strong social capital and adaptive identity negotiation, Nglinggi has cultivated a resilient culture of tolerance among its diverse religious and cultural communities. Informal education via everyday social interaction, intergenerational storytelling and a community-led “Peace School” reinforces interfaith understanding from an early age. Social capital, comprising trust, shared norms and community networks, plays a pivotal role in preventing conflict and fostering collective resilience, especially in the face of digital misinformation. The village's proactive approaches, including digital literacy teams, emergency communication protocols and cross-cultural events, demonstrate how local wisdom and citizen participation can sustain harmony without relying solely on formal institutions. This case offers policy-relevant insights for promoting inclusive development and intergroup solidarity in both rural and urban contexts across diverse sociocultural settings.
