Abstract:
I discuss first how Allen Scott and my research careers have intertwined around trying to make practical and theoretical sense of the restructuring process. More recently, we have both advocated radically new models for making sense of restructuring, Scott promoting the notion of cognitive cultural capitalism as a new phase in the development of industrial capitalism, while I have been arguing that the vary nature of the urbanization process has been transformed in a shift from metropolitan to regional urbanization. After looking at the metropolitan and regional urbanization models, I briefly discuss the connections between Scott's and my approaches, ending with a critique, urging Scott to be more spatial in his analyses and more flexible in his political economy approach.
