Mutualism and ontology: rethinking spatial imagery composition in Chinese gardens

Sun Ce and Yu Bingqin

Landscape Research, 2025, vol. 50, issue 6, 1025-1047

Abstract: This paper explores the distinct approach to imagery construction in Chinese classical gardens, contrasting it with the development of Western ontology. It reveals that the essence of imagery construction in Chinese gardens lies in evoking poetic aesthetic experiences through the interplay between landscape elements and the body, rather than relying on the physical forms or symbolic meanings of the elements. The paper analyzes three key aspects: the construction of relationship, the intervention of the body, and the dissolution of the entity, elucidating the underlying principles of imagery construction in Chinese gardens. It offers insights for dissolving the subject-object dichotomy in contemporary Western landscape design and provides a framework for the translation of modernity.
