Landscape Research, 2025, vol. 50, issue 6, 939-952

Abstract: This study examines Coastal Cultural Landscapes (CCLs) shaped by traumatic historical events in the Asian context. Focusing on Kangkangee Art Village, Yeongdo Island, Korea, it analyses the transformation of CCLs through the phases of Formation, Transition, Organisation, and Transmission, employing a Cultural Memory approach. Archival research, field studies, interviews, and workshops reveal that historical events, policies, and media significantly influenced the area’s transformation. The urban regeneration project preserved internal memories, with village guides serving as key transmitters of cultural memory. The study underscores the importance of safeguarding both physical and intangible elements of CCLs through authentic urban regeneration initiatives. Active community participation, involving residents as participants, co-producers, and transmitters, minimised conflicts and ensured the sustainable preservation and utilisation of CCLs. These findings offer a framework for policy development and deepen the understanding of CCLs’ transformation and memory preservation.
