Subterranean architecture: model making as a new way of understanding industrial space

Abstract: Subterranean Architecture is a creative work exhibited in Immigrant Networks, a group exhibition involving five case studies responding to research on post-war immigrant labour in Australia—Migrant Camps, Snowy Hydro, Port Kembla Steelworks, Woomera, and Melbourne Suburbs. It comprises a 1900 × 450 × 690 mm physical model displayed with a documentary film, representing a small section of the Hot Strip Mill (HSM) at Port Kembla Steelworks. This paper examines the creative process and complexities of modelling a sectional segment of the HSM, complexities which influenced all stages from data collection through to fabrication. Rather than an empirical and realistic representation, the model responds to and represents the stories of past non-Anglophone immigrant workers, reintegrating them within the corporate space of post-war industrial architecture. The paper explores the motivations behind creating an industrial sectional model and the challenges raised.
