Abstract:
Childhood has changed markedly over the last three generations in response to physical and social changes both locally and globally. This paper asks: How is childhood experienced by city children today and what have been the primary changes in the last three generations, ascertaining the reasons for these? We analyse the primary changes in childhood as experienced by families living in five major Pacific Rim cities. Planning has the ability to markedly influence children’s city wellbeing through its spatial planning remit. We identify the key changes that planning can and should address in supporting child positive city environments.
