Hezbollah’s state capture in Lebanon

Lina Khatib

Small Wars and Insurgencies, 2025, vol. 36, issue 4, 637-658

Abstract: This article examines Hezbollah’s state capture in Lebanon as entangled in the country’s systemic corruption, which has led the Lebanese state to be captured by its ruling elite. The article analyzes how this domestic entanglement, in addition to international factors, allowed Hezbollah to exercise state capture at the political, economic and security levels. The article ends with arguing that reversing the effects of Hezbollah’s state capture cannot be done in isolation from reforming Lebanon’s political system at large.
