The German campaign of the IRA and its resolution by Eberhard Spiecker and Alec Reid

Abstract:
Scholars have shown little interest in the German campaign of the IRA and have mostly been content to see it as a futile attempt to break away from the stalemate that existed in the conflict in Northern Ireland. However, as this paper will seek to show, the resolution of the campaign and the process of reaching an accord between the Republican movement and the German government, facilitated by Alec Reid and Eberhard Spiecker, set the tone for future arrangements, such as the 1994 ceasefire.
