Abstract:
Whereas East Asia stands out as the most dynamic and competitive region, both at present times and according to projections for the coming decades. Europe's repeated attempts to develop a strong Eurasian partnership have not proved successful. On the basis of a historical approach looking at the developments of the relations between Europe and East Asia since the 1950s, this article highlights the major reasons why opportunities to strengthen inter-regional links have been missed. Finally, concentrating on what Europe's strategy should be in the future, recommendations are formulated on economic, institutional and policy issues.
