Bringing breadth and relevance to introductory economics courses using JEL codes

Abstract:
The author of this article describes an exercise for introductory economics courses in which students are exposed to the breadth of economic study using JEL codes. JEL codes have historically been used to classify economic subject matter and ultimately document the ever-evolving scope of economics. This discussion assignment provides an opportunity for students to better understand what economists study and identify aspects of the field that are relevant to them. The article concludes with a roadmap for instructors wishing to draw on the students’ initial activity responses throughout the course to maintain student relevance and interest.
