Making Sense in Practice Doctors at Work

Abstract:
This article explores how membership in the medical profession shapes the propensity to, and the processes of, clinician behavior change. Grounded in a sensemaking perspective, it uses doctors' own words to describe and illustrate different features of their worlds. With reference to recent examples of egregious performance, it examines how fundamental features of professionalism - autonomy, self-regulation, trustworthiness, assured competency - may contribute negatively, as well as positively, to quality of care and the respect given to the profession.
