Abstract:
Businesses using e-commerce are worried about their databases and client’s data security. Researchers have suggested businesses should adopt and use blockchain technology to address the security challenges in e-commerce. However, blockchain technology has flaws that inhibit acceptance, adoption, and usage such as high operating costs, signature verification, and cultural acceptance. This research paper aims to provide a snapshot of the field by identifying factors influencing the adoption and usage of blockchain technology in e-commerce. To achieve this, a systematic literature review was conducted using four online databases (WorldCat.org, ProQuest, Science Direct, and IEEE Xplore) and Google Scholar. Thematic analysis using Atlas.ti was used to evaluate 19 articles that meet the inclusion criteria. The study’s key findings are institutional, market and technical factors that influence the adoption of blockchain in e-commerce. The research’s novel contribution is to theory by developing a model for adopting and using blockchain technology in e-commerce. The practical contribution is for businesses and government entities to consider the importance of reducing costs (commission and transaction) while offering secure, scalable, traceable, legal, and compatible blockchains in e-commerce. The study contributes to SDG 8 by ensuring that banking and financial services are available to all by 2030.
