The possible relation between bio-fuels, agriculture and the demand for food in South African cities

Abstract: Global food security is constantly faced with new challenges as new driving forces emerge. One of these new emerging driving forces is the link between the demand for energy and agriculture, specifically with regards to food security discourses. This paper provides an overview of the discourses around bio-fuels and also more specifically the situation with regards to bio-fuels in South Africa; South Africa's agricultural productivity post-1994; food security and urbanization in South Africa and food supply to urban centres. The paper concludes by pointing out that the growth of bio-fuel production coupled with levels of agricultural unproductiveness in South Africa can have a potentially negative impact on urban food supply.
