The dismissal and re-positioning of government ministers and senior administrators in Tonga: leadership and performance challenges

Abstract: This article appreciates the central importance of leadership and performance in the structure and operation of government with reference to recent experience in Tonga. The experience addressed has involved the dismissal and re-positioning of ministers and senior administrators in circumstances which raise critical questions about the nature and efficacy of the government and the decisions taken. The challenges are clear and need to be responded to by way of a genuine commitment to purposeful and quality governance for the benefit of the community.
