The paper explores the labour market consequences of the near-terminal decline of employment in the UK coal industry. Despite the job loss, registered unemployment has not risen. Using labour market accounts derived mainly from Census of Population data, the paper examines the roles of migration, commuting, job creation and changes in labour force participation as mediating influences. Substantial 'hidden' male unemployment is exposed, and rates of 'real' unemployment are also calculated. BEATTY C. et FOTHERGILL S. Dieser Aufsatz untersucht die Arbeitsmarktfolgeerscheinungen des nahezu hoffnunngslosen Absinkens der Erwerbstatigkeit in der Kohlenindustrie des Vereinigten Konigreichs. Trotz Stellenverlusten ist die als solche amtlich registrierte Arbeitslosigkeit nicht gestiegen. Mit Hilfe von Feststellungen des Arbeitsmarktes, die sich grosstenteils aus Angaben der Volkszahlumg ableiten, untersucht der Aufsatz die Rolle, die Wanderung, Pendelverkehr, Arbeitsbeschaffung und der dank Wandel in der Betriebsmitwirkung zunehmend vermittelnde Einfluss der Arbeiterschaft spielen. Es wird eine betrachtliche 'versteckte' Arbeitslosigkeit unter Mannern enthullt, und Raten 'echter' Arbeitslosigkeit berechnet.
