Abstract: COOK P. and KIRKPATRICK C. (1997) Globalization, regionalization and third world development, Reg. Studies 31, 55-66. Recent decades have seen a strengthening of cross-border economic relationships and an increasing integration of the world economy. The aim of this paper is to analyse the implications of the these globalization and regionalization trends for the economic growth and development of third world countries. The causes of globalization are identified and the competing 'convergent' and 'divergent' interpretations of the impact of globalization and regionalization on developing countries' economic welfare are discussed. Les decennies recentes ont temoigne d'un renforcement des liens economiques transfrontaliers et d'une integration croissante de l'economie mondiale. Cet article cherche a analyser les consequences de la tendance a la globalisation et a la regionalisation pour ce qui est de la croissance et du developpement economiques des pays du tiers-monde. On identifie les causes de la globalisation et on discute des interpretations divergentes de l'impact de la globalisation et de la regionalisation sur les interets economiques des pays en voie de developpement. In den letzten Jahrzehnten hat eine Intensivierung der grenzuberschreitenden wirtschaftlichen Beziehungen und eine zunehmende Integration der Weltwirtschaft stattgefunden. Dieser Aufsatz beabsichtigt, die Implikationen dieser Globalisierungs- und Regionalisierungstendenzen fur die Entwicklung von Landern der dritten Welt zu analysieren. Es werden die Ursachen der Globalisierung identifiziert, und die miteinander konkurrierenden 'konvergierenden' und 'divergierenden' Interpretationen der Auswirkung der Globalisierung und Regionalisierung auf das wirtschaftliche Wohl der Entwicklungslander besprochen.
