This paper explores the characteristics and development patterns of German manufacturing subsidiaries in the UK and Ireland. It is based on a sample of 102 companies which were surveyed during 1994. A series of hypotheses are tested relating both to the literature on subsidiary development and to the previous limited knowledge of intra-EU investment at the level of firms. A number of policy issues are considered, from the perspectives of regional economic development agencies, for German multinational companies and for intrapreneurial activity leading to the potential expansion of these types of subsidiary. On considere plusieurs questions de politique du point de vue des societes de developpement economique regional, des societes multinationales allemandes et de l'activite d'entreprise amenant a l'expansion eventuelle de ces types de subvention. Sie stu¨tzen sich auf eine repra¨sentative Auswahl von 102 Gesellschaften, die im Jahre 1994 untersucht wurden. Es werden Hypothesenserien untersucht, die sich sowohl auf die Literatur der Entwicklung von Tochtergesellschaften beziehen wie auch auf die zuvor begrenzten Kenntnisse u¨ber auf Firmenebene innerhalb der EU stattfindende Investierungen. Verschiedene richtungweisende Fragen werden beru¨cksichtigt, vom Standpunkt regionaler Wirtschaftsentwicklungsagenturen im Hinblick auf deutsche MNCs und fu¨r Unternehmerta¨tigkeit, die zu mo¨glicher Ausweitung dieser Art Tochtergesellschaften fu¨hren.
