International Trade, Production Chains and Corporate Stategies: Japan's Timber Trade with British Columbia

Abstract: EDGINGTON D. W. and HAYTER R. (1997) International trade, production chains and corporate strategies: Japan's timber trade with British Columbia, Reg. Studies 31, 151-166. This paper discusses the construct of the production chain as a way of understanding the dynamics of regional development within a global economy. The production chain concept is developed as a set of integrated production, trade and service functions which add value to particular products to explicitly incorporate organizational and geographical structures from the perspective of processes of internationalization. The paper argues that the struggles that occur between corporations along internationally defined production chains complement trade relations and tensions among countries and exert important impacts on local development. Empirically, the paper analyses the British Columbia-Japan timber supply production chain, which in the last 25 years has experienced significant changes in size, composition and organization. Some implications for local development in British Columbia are noted. EDGINGTON D. W. et HAYTER R. Cet article discute de la notion d'un maillon de production en tant que moyen de comprendre la dynamique de l'amenagement du territoire au sein d'une economie internationale. La notion d'un maillon de production se voit developper comme un ensemble de fonctions de production, de commerce et de service integrees qui valorisent des produits particuliers afin d'incorporer formellement des structures organisationnelles et geographiques dans l'optique des processus d'internationalisation. L'article affirme que les luttes qui se declenchent entre des entreprises le long des maillons de production delimites sur le plan international sont le complement des rapports commerciaux et des tensions entre des pays et influent de facon non-negligeable sur le developpement local. Du point de vue empirique, l'article analyse le maillon de production entre la Colombie britannique et le Japon relatif a l'offre de bois qui connait depuis les 25 dernieres annees d'importants changements de taille, de composition et d'organisation. Der Begriff der Produktionskette wird als ein Zusammenspiel von integrierter Produktion, Handelsund Dienstleistungsfunktionen verstanden, die den Wert besonderer Produkte vermehren, um organisatorische und geographische Strukturen ausdru¨cklich von der Perspektive internationalisierender Vorga¨nge aus miteinzubeziehen. Der Aufsatz stellt die Behauptung auf, dass die Ka¨mpfe, die unter Korporationen in Richtung international festgelegter Produktionsketten ausgetragen werden, als Erga¨nzung zu Handelsbeziehungen und Spannungen zwischen La¨ndern zu betrachten sind, sowie als wichtige Auswirkungen auf die einheimische Entwicklung. Vom empirischen Standpunkt aus gesehen analysiert der Aufsatz die britisch kolumbianisch-japanische Holzlieferungs-Verarbeitungskette, die in den letzten 25 Jahren bedeutsamen A¨nderungen betreff Umfang, Zusammensetzung und Organisation unterworfen war. Es werden Implikationen fu¨r die einheimische Entwicklung in Britisch Kolumbien festgestellt.
