In recent years there has been growing research evidence in the UK to suggest that official unemployment figures do not accurately reflect the true extent of joblessness, mainly because they ignore aspects of economic inactivity such as long term sickness, early retirement and participation on government employment and training schemes. This paper examines the nature and extent of hidden unemployment in Northern Ireland and in different local areas within Northern Ireland. The paper shows that there are large numbers of people who do not appear in official unemployment figures but who, under plausible assumptions, ought to be considered to be part of the stock of unemployed. The results show that if the hidden component of joblessness is accounted for, total male unemployment in Northern Ireland is more than one-third higher than official figures suggest. ARMSTRONG D. Au cours des dernieres annees la recherche effectuee au Royaume-Uni laisse supposer de plus en plus que les chiffres officiels ne constituent pas une mesure exacte du niveau actuel du chomage, surtout parce qu'ils ne comprennent pas certains aspects de l'inactivite economique, tels le conge maladie, la preretraite, les stagiaires et l'emploi aide. Cet article cherche a examiner le caractere et l'importance du chomage deguise en Irlande du Nord et dans divers bassins d'emploi locaux au sein du pays. Il s'avere que nombreux sont ceux qui ne figurent pas dans les chiffres officiels du chomage mais qui devraient l'etre, s'il y a tout lieu de le considerer. A partir des resultats il est evident que le chomage masculin global en Irlande du Nord depasse le chiffre officiel de plus d'un tiers, si l'on tient compte du chomage deguise. ARMSTRONG D. In den letzten Jahren gab es zunehmend Forschungsbeweise im Vereinigten Konigreich, die nahelegen, dass die offiziellen Arbeitslosenzahlen nicht das wahre Ausmass der Arbeitslosigkeit zutreffend reflektieren, hauptsachlich weil sie Aspekte wirtschaftlicher Untatigkeit wie langfristige Invaliditat, vorzeitigen Ruhestand und Teilnahme an von der Regierung eingerichteten Arbeits-und Ausbildungsprogrammen ausser Acht lassen. Dieser Aufsatz untersucht Natur und Ausmass der verborgenen Arbeitslosigkeit in Nordirland u ¨berhaupt, sowie in verschiedenen Einzelgebieten des Landes. Der Aufsatz zeigt, dass es eine hohe Anzahl von Leuten gibt, die zwar nicht in den Arbeitslosenzahlen auftauchen, jedoch einleuchtende Voraussetzungen erfullen, sie als Teil des Arbeitslosenbestandes einzuordnen. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass bei Einbeziehung der verborgenen Komponente der Arbeitslosigkeit die Gesamtzahl der arbeitslosen Manner in Nordirland mehr als ein Drittel hoher ist als die offiziellen Zahlen angeben.
