The German Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Industry: Spatial Growth and Innovation Patterns

This paper is motivated by previous studies that have found that information and communication technology (ICT) industries seem to cluster geographically and having spatially clustered growth rates. In Germany, the production of ICT devices is concentrated in clusters of innovating regions (in terms of patents). ICT service production, on the other hand, is concentrated in larger urban areas. The data show that negative spatial effects are present for several sectors, which might give support for the so-called backwash effect described by Gunnar Myrdal in 1957. Weak positive growth effects from ICT are found, but these growth effects stem more from innovation in rather than from production or use of ICT. [image omitted] Maurseth P. B. et Frank B. Dieser Beitrag wurde durch vorangegangene Studien motiviert, aus denen hervorging, dass sich ICT-Industrien in geografischen Clustern zu ballen scheinen und raumlich geballte Wachstumsraten aufweisen. In Deutschland konzentriert sich die Herstellung von ICT-Geraten auf Cluster in (gemessen an den Patenten) innovierenden Regionen. Die Erbringung von ICT-Dienstleistungen ist hingegen auf grossere urbane Gebiete konzentriert. Aus den Daten geht hervor, dass fur mehrere Sektoren negative raumliche Auswirkungen vorhanden sind, die den von Gunnar Myrdal (1957) beschriebenen sogenannten Entzugseffekt unterstutzen konnten. Wir stellen schwache positive Wachstumseffekte aufgrund von ICT fest, wobei diese Wachstumseffekte aber mehr durch Innovation verursacht werden als durch die Herstellung oder Nutzung von ICT. En Alemania, la produccion de los dispositivos de TIC esta concentrada en agrupaciones de regiones innovadoras (en cuanto a patentes se refiere). Sin embargo, la produccion de servicios de TIC esta concentrada en zonas urbanas mas grandes. Los datos indican que los efectos espaciales negativos estan presentes en varios sectores lo que podria contribuir al denominado efecto regresivo descrito por Gunnar Myrdal (1957). Observamos debiles efectos de crecimiento positivos en las TIC pero estos efectos de crecimiento proceden mas de la innovacion que de la produccion o el uso de las TIC.
