The role of FDI-focused business and technology parks in promoting local employment growth

Regional Studies, 2025, vol. 59, issue 1, 2577921

Abstract: This paper examines whether the establishment of foreign direct investment (FDI) focused business and technology parks (BTPs) enhances local employment and examines whether this policy strategy is conditioned by BTP heterogeneity. Using detailed Irish panel data (1986–2016) and a propensity score matching with difference-in-difference (PSM-DiD) method, the analysis shows that electoral divisions in close proximity to BTPs experience 0.7% higher annual employment growth rates. This effect is stronger in urban areas and in electoral divisions with higher initial unemployment. The degree of sectoral concentration matters, where BTPs with a higher proportion of pharmaceutical and information and communication technology firms are associated with higher employment growth.
