The Review of Faith & International Affairs, 2025, vol. 23, issue 3, 112-121
Abstract:
This article examines the Catholic Church’s evolving position on artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, with reference to Pope Francis’s contributions. It frames the Church’s discourse within the broader concepts of the “technocratic paradigm” and “throwaway culture,” recurring themes of Francis’s pontificate. The analysis centers on the Pope’s 2024 messages and his address to the G7, which advocated for a “human-centric AI” that prioritizes human dignity and also led to the finalization of the relevant Note Antiqua et Nova on the Relationship Between Artificial Intelligence and Human Intelligence published by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith and the Dicastery for Culture and Education. The article highlights the Church’s rejection of apocalyptic narratives, instead promoting proactive governance and political responsibility to guide technological innovation and deployment.
