Abstract: Corden outlines the development of the concept of effective protection, describing the influence on his thinking of the Canadian economist, Clarence Barber. He discusses the use of effective protection in policy-making in Australia, before assessing the contributions of Harry Johnson and Bela Balassa. In conclusion, Corden reflects on the Australian context in which these ideas originated.
