The Historic Preservation Gap in Graduate Real Estate Curricula

Robert Benedict and Cari Goetcheus

Journal of Real Estate Practice and Education, 2014, vol. 17, issue 2, 111-124

Abstract: This paper focuses on the pedagogy of interdisciplinary graduate real estate and historic preservation programs. Currently there is one historic preservation track offered in graduate real estate programs. Academic administrators have faced a curricula dilemma balancing a need to provide appropriate preservation-focused courses that complement graduate real estate development curriculums. Using an online survey, students and alumni of four U.S. graduate real estate programs provide insight into whether a need exists for elective courses in historic preservation. Participating programs were Arizona State University, Auburn University, Clemson University, and the University of Maryland. Survey results confirm that graduate students and alumni of real estate development programs desire to more fully engage in an interdisciplinary approach that spans the two disciplines.
