Infusing Cultural Differences into Complex Real Estate Student Projects: An Exploratory Learning Experience

Abstract:
This paper presents the results of an interdisciplinary study on whether grouping students into culturally diverse teams to work on complex real estate case studies enhances their perceptions of their cultural competence and the total learning experience. Analysis of quantitative data and open-ended responses indicated positive perceptions of the learning experience and enhancement of collaborative learning skills. The picture regarding intercultural competency was more complex. Culture was not mentioned in the majority of open-ended responses, however a closer look revealed significant cultural signals, both positive and negative. Still, the students’ comments provide helpful insights for instructors considering changes in their curricula to prepare real estate professionals for today’s global industry.
