Abstract:
The evolution of basketball requires the adoption of collective strategies that help the players to improve their three-point and pick-and-roll performances. Rebounds and shooting performance remain the most improved aspects when playing at home, but further investigation is warranted to conduct a more comprehensive analysis of the collective strategies primarily influenced by game-location. This study aimed to analyse pre-shooting combinations and pick-and-roll performance differences, together with game-related statistics, among the Asociación de Clubs de Baloncesto (ACB) Spanish Basketball First Division teams playing at home, away, or in a neutral court during the pandemic COVID-19 season. A retrospective cross-sectional study (n = 170 games) was carried out. Game data were collected from the InStat tool. Home teams had a better performance in game-related statistics (points, three-point percentage, assists, turnovers, fouls) than the away teams. Home teams also had more free-throws (made and attempted), rebounds, offensive rebounds and fouls drawn than neutral-court teams. Home teams had a better performance than away teams in collective situations like hand-off and pick-and-roll. In conclusion, we recommend basketball coaches to especially focus on hand-off and pick-and roll defensive and offensive strategies, since those are the main collective aspects from the perspective of game-location.
