Implications of policy objectives on financial resource dependency and organizational structure in US federal agencies

International Review of Public Administration, 2015, vol. 20, issue 1, 34-50

Abstract: Resources are important for the survival of modern public organizations, but there have been few empirical studies that have analyzed the resource dependency of public organizations. There is a need for public administrators, political scientists and practitioners to empirically test the effectiveness of organizational policy typology to explore resource acquisition. This study investigates the relationship among the policy objectives, resource dependency and organizational structure of 79 US federal agencies. The regression results demonstrate that agency policy objectives affect resource dependency, formalization and specialization in federal agencies. The findings suggest that Lowi’s organizational typology can be a new variable that explains the inflow of financial resources and organizational structure.
