Abstract:
Leading indicators are developed for the South African building industry using qualitative and quantitative data. A scoring system developed by the National Bureau of Economic Research, USA, is applied to determine the weights of the individual time series. Six criteria are applied when assessing and selecting the indicators. These are: economic significance, statistical adequacy, timing at revivals and recessions, conformity to historical business cycles, smoothness, and currency or timeliness. It is found that the composite leading indicators lead cyclical turning points in the South African building industry by between one and three quarters.
