Pyramids, Banking Relationships and Investment in South Africa

S Davidson

Studies in Economics and Econometrics, 1998, vol. 22, issue 3, 1-15

Abstract: Banks play an important role in reducing information asymmetry in the United States and also play a role in Japanese and German corporate governance. The system of corporate governance in South Africa is similar to that of Japan. This paper investigates whether banks in South-Africa play similar roles to overseas banks. It is not clear, from the results what role, if any, banks play in reducing information asymmetry and agency problems in South Africa.
